Robin will first work to assess and help you gain more self-awareness of how your body is dealing with the anger. You may notice that you are getting stuck in highly activated states (anxiety, anger, guilt, sadness, inability to control your emotions) or that your body is experiencing more shut down “stuck” states such as heaviness, numbness, blank mind, brain fog, overall blah feeling, and a sense of hopelessness or despair.
From there Robin will help you connect to own inner resources so that you regain control over your body. Through Somatic Experience (SE) Therapy Robin will teach you how to calm yourself down and shift from highly emotional states or shutdown states to more relaxed states that elicit a sense of safety, security and well-being.
Once you are feeling stabilized, Robin will begin stage two of Somatic Experience (SE) Therapy. Robin will encourage you to move towards the anger or rage and finally process it. This can be difficult but is an integral part of the process. Robin will assess whether the stage should be approached in a titrated way, allowing due time for you to come to terms with your varying states of emotions.
Many people need to first deal with their own fears or shame about having anger. One of the most important takeaways from therapy with Robin is to truly understand that the anger or rage inside of them is a healthy mobilizing defensive response that was needed to protect themselves at one time in their life. It was the right response at the time but the environment failed to allow the cycle of energy to be completed and eventually released.
